Protecting the Planet 1% at a Time
Posted on Apr 30th 2024 | advocacy, better world, learn, quarterly dispatch,1% for the Planet was born from a simple concept: businesses should give back to the earth from which they profit. Founded in 2001 by Yvon Chouinard of Patagonia and Craig Matthews of Blue Ribbon Flies, the organization has since rallied an impressive network of over 5,200 businesses in 110 countries, collectively donating over $630 million to more than 6,700 environmental nonprofits.
The principle is straightforward: businesses pledge to donate 1% of their annual sales to environmental causes. This commitment, sizable and consistent, is verified by 1% for the Planet to ensure authenticity and prevent green washing.
Annually, 1% for the Planet hosts a Global Summit to address pressing environmental issues and devise sustainable solutions. They also conduct online meetings to update members on environmental trends and share insights into sustainable practices.
In 2022, the Planet Impact Fund was introduced, simplifying the donation process. Each year, approximately 10% of this fund is allocated through grants to six organizations that champion four key environmental areas: Rights to Nature, Conservation & Restoration, Resilient Communities, and Just Economies.
